Dental biofilm, commonly known as plaque, is the yellowish layer of bacteria that can build up on teeth over time. Made up of billions of bacteria that can cause dental decay, gingivitis, periodontitis & peri-implantitis.  Keeping biofilm under control is an important part of preventative dental care. Biofilm can increase the risk of cardiovascular & respiratory disease, diabetes & arthritis.

Good oral hygiene can prevent most biofilm from forming, but even with regular brushing and cleaning between the teeth, some biofilm may still remain. Over time this can harden into scale, which should to be removed by a dental professional.

Guided biofilm therapy (GBT) using the EMS Air Flow® system is a new approach to oral health care.

Guided biofilm therapy (GBT) using the EMS Air Flow® system is a new approach to oral health care.

Air Flow ® uses a fine spray of warmed water & Erythritol PLUS powder to gently deep clean the tooth surface above and below the gum line. This minimally invasive technology is safe to use on all oral surfaces & difficult to reach places: enamel, dentine, soft tissues, restorations, orthodontic appliances & implants.

Erythritol PLUS powder has the finest particle size (14microns) used in dentistry, much finer than the paste used to polish your teeth. It is more thorough and comfortable and gentler on tooth surfaces than traditional methods resulting in less bleeding & sensitivity.

“When I first heard about Guided Biofilm Therapy and Air Flow ® treatments it wasa light bulb moment. This is the biggest change in hygiene & periodontal care for decades and I wanted to be able to offer it.”

The Swiss-made EMS Air Flow ® Prophylaxis Master is the best engineered Air Flow ® device available.

“Investing in this has meant investing in the future of excellent oral care”.

Guided Biofilm Therapy is a multi-phase process. After referral by your dentist*:

We’ll first complete a comprehensive dental assessment to identify any areas of concern.

A coloured dye is applied to your teeth to see where biofilm is present.

We can discuss your brushing and cleaning techniques, your diet and other factors that may be putting your oral health at risk.

We can then begin removing the biofilm, stain & soft scale using EMS Air Flow®. Although, there won’t be direct contact with your teeth, you may feel a light sensation from the air and warmed water.

  • Appropriate Air Flow® powder will be used to help remove or reduce stains.
  • Areas that need deeper biofilm removal can be treated with Perio Flow®.
  • EMS Air Flow® technology greatly reduces the need to use traditional hand instruments and ultrasonics during cleaning and polishing treatments, however these may still be required to remove older, harder scale from some teeth.
  • The new EMS PIEZON®with NO-PAIN technology and its adaptive response feature provides a quick treatment assured with precision, safety and improved comfort.
